About Artist
Growing up on a ranch in Colorado my father taught me many useful skills including woodworking.
At the time, it was more out of necessity rather than a pure hobby. However, over the years things evolved and I have now enjoyed woodworking in some capacity for 40+ years and have made everything from small wooden gifts to skateboards to custom cabinets and furniture and more.
I have a strong interest and background in the arts, whether it is sketching, oil painting, ceramics, woodworking, or one of my many other artistic endeavors. Through the years I have sought out formal instruction and training from many artists in various mediums.
I became intrigued with woodturning in late 2005. It looked like a great way to enjoy my love for woodworking and projects could be completed quickly,. I find the process exhilarating and am
totally hooked on the instant gratification part. I have been turning ever since and thoroughly enjoy creating wood shavings out in my shop whenever possible.
The nature of wood - with its inherent differences in color, grain, and texture provides a wonderful canvas upon which most of my work starts. I like to tell folks that the wood is really the "star of the show" in all my pieces! I enjoy creating both functional and artistic pieces. Form, grain pattern, texture, and color are all important aspects of my work. My work has been influenced by many woodturning artists, and I truly appreciate all their continued mentoring!
I do purchase from time to time exotic woods for turning, for I truly appreciate the beauty and richness of the grain patterns in some of these woods. However, as much as possible, I use salvaged woods from downed trees, etc.
A very special THANK YOU and acknowledgement to my lovely wife and family for all their support and encouragement over the years. Their patience is a blessing as I spend countless hours in my workshop, and make spur of the moment wood gathering stops whenever I see a downed tree on the side of the road. They are also the imspiration of many of the new ideas I come up with out in the shop. Without their support none of this would be possible!
